5 Things You Need to Know About SEO Strategy in 2017

In Australia there are not many or in fact any people or businesses that escape our skepticism. Whether it be politicians or big business, we handle them all with a high degree of ambivalence. Often we talk badly about them at BBQs, share hilarious memes on Facebook and if we are over 80, pen well written letters of meanness.

With Google however it seems to be a different story. To this day have I never heard (over a dry pinot) people ranting or raving about "why ON EARTH Google can't bring the type down a couple of fonts, shove everything over to the left and make some more room on that selfish, selfish, take AAALLLLL the glory first page". Nope, Google seems to avoid our scorn completely, even though it has SO much power over our businesses.

It is precisely because of this power however that we must continue to speak well of it in public and twist ourselves (politely) into SEO shaped pretzels. Of course it will all be worth it because bathing in the light of first page search results is AMAZING for our business.

So to give you a chance to limber up for a new year of pretzeldom here are some good SEO strategies to know.

Step 1: High quality content not SEO tricks

Google is getting smarter and smarter about outsmarting cheaters. That means high quality website and blog content that is keyword optimised is what will get you winning on rankings. Think about what is helpful and educational to your customers not how to trick them into coming to your website.

Step 2: High quality back links

Google likes back links. That is, links to your websites from external sites. What Google REALLY doesn't like is fake backlinks built by backlink farms. Backlink farms are where you have backlinks to sites that have no relevance to your business. So just how do I get high quality backlinks to my site I hear you ask? The three best ways

a) by issuing regular press releases

b) blogging on trusted third party websites

c) getting your website listed on relevant directories and industry portals

Step 3: Keyword optimising

To help Google help you, your content needs to be easily found. This means you need to keyword optimise website copy and blog content. Think about the keywords and phrases that your customers would be using to find information or educate themselves on your industry. If you want to put some science around it use tools like SEMRushGoogle Planneror Moz to check how many searches are done a month and the amount of competition for the searches. You are aiming for high search per month and low competition. You want keywords in titles, your URL and copy.

Step 4: Avoid keyword stuffing

We are a Melbourne based content marketing agency. In our search results we look to rank for SEO Melbourne and Content Marketing Melbourne. That's because when we do outstanding content marketing and we live in Melbourne. Do you want to punch me? That's because I am keyword stuffing. Ramming those keywords in where they make little sense looks salesy and weird. Try not to do that. It will annoy your readers and Google knows what you are doing and doesn't like it. (How does it know? Creepy...)

Step 5: Metadata is designed for clicking not optimising

Metadata is that paragraph you can see under titles on the search page. Previously you needed keywords in there for search rankings. Not anymore. You still need to have cracking metadata though because its what separates you from the riff raff and gets people to click on you vs the other sites listed.
